I have to say, I cant stand this idea that all school children need to be at grade level in every subject. First, who decides what at grade level means? What is developmentally appropriate can vary widely depending on gender, race, socioeconomic status, and individual talents. How can we possibly have one set of standards that are supposed to account for all that? Second, each child *does* have their own strengths and weaknesses. Some just get math and leap ahead by months or years from what is typical for their age. Others struggle with math and it takes them a lot longer to catch on. There is NOTHING wrong with either situation; we all have different talents and learning styles. Yet, kids often compare their grades on tests or report cards, and many parents do it too. Theyre left feeling dumb if they do not keep up in every area. Parents, too, many feel badly that their children are struggling. Guess what! Everyone learns differently. Each child WILL be ahead in some areas and behind in others. Maybe their ahead areas wont even be academic. They are still worthy, wonderful people who are still gaining knowledge and skills, at their own pace and in their own way. Thats all that matters.
