I have to say that some of the rave reviews of 12 Years a Slave by some of the tough movie critiques are almost as brilliant in their shared insights about the moral depravity of the American Slave system as McQueens brilliant direction of the film itself. Indeed, in this recent NYT review, Mr Fish notes that the Director McQueen deliberately edited out of his film a few forgiving passages that Northrup allowed at the very end of his slave testimony, lest we conclude that there is some reason for hope, much less sympathy for all the victims of this cruelest of institutions.
