I have to smile sometimes... Weve been in Newtok for a little over a year .... When we first got here we were asked to help the new council --- we got scorned at and arrested and when we were signing up our GCI internet at the TC office the Newtok Clint Eastwood walked in and with his best impression said: The old council doesnt want you inside this building ... . Hahah ... and just recently the President of the old council called be up out of the blue and said: Newtok is closing IN on you.... . I just had to say Ok Andy Ill go to your council meeting (I didnt go it would just be a waste of time) ... Anyway! Ive been critical of the new council and the State for moving ahead without much community involvement ... (Its up to the community to get involved...) ... and so they, the new council and some family have been doing their best to give out the Cold Shoulder .... When I first got to Newtok and posted things on Facebook ... Lots of likes and comments -- even offers of coffee ... Today? *smile* ... Hardly any likes - got kicked out of the kitchen and gotta make my OWN coffee! .... In the end small town and village politics is just a bunch of nonsense ... About as interesting as a steaming pile of dog crap.... The new council is on its way and nothing short of a revolution will stop them... I get a few questions from some ... But theyll figure it all out ... I mean how interesting can a water and sewer and fuel tank farm request be??? We all have to remember this isnt important .... Who gets what ... Contracts here ... Contracts there... I still smirk at the: let my associate have the $23,000 to get things started comment ... There is lots of greed and lots of coveting surrounding Newtoks move project. Lots of people taking an interest in Newtok ... And usually for their own interest ... Nothing wrong with this ... Its a capitalist society and this is just how it all works.... Taking care of business. The State is going to go with the new council --- at some point the community has to come together to recognize the contributions of the previous council. There is $30 million of developed work completed at Mertarvik. It was competed through years of hard work and effort by the old council.... Meetings, Time and effort ... I think the State of Alaska DCRA is jumping ahead of itself trying to salvage Mertarvik. The IBIA appeal, although will probably side with the BIA determination, hasnt even been issued by the IBIA....There are still significant issues and doubt about the Newtok Village memberships preferences for Council representation for the Village. Thanks to Katherine and Lisa for letting us use their internet over the year.... (New council) and to Joseph Inakak, Thanks! for the help you gave us when we were fishing! (Old council).... And for you and the rest of the council members efforts over the years putting together Mertarvik! New council, Old Council... Its all rhetoric and politics ... Our only interest is our kids and family and the next 3 years .... ...Get to work and dont take too many more wooden nickels!
