I have tried to remain silent in the wake of Robin Williams - TopicsExpress

I have tried to remain silent in the wake of Robin Williams suicide but I find I cannot remain so. I am so greatly offended by the generic show of hypocrisy by our society at large. Throughout the day I have seen videos and tributes to Williams legacy, and everyone bemoaning the loss of such a creative genius. It is truly a great and tragic loss, for his family and for the rest of us as well. I am NOT saying the tributes are not deserved. I am saddened because I am seeing flowery tributes from people that I have seen post cutting, vicious criticisms of other people just because they happen to disagree about something. I have seen quirky or eccentric people ridiculed mercilessly by these same people. Williams happened to be one of those eccentric personalities, but now that he is gone we are lauding that quirkiness. Well it is known that many creative people suffer from mental illness. Where is the compassion for those anonymous sufferers of the same depression that took Williams life? I am sorry he felt the depths of despair that led him to believe there was no way out. But know this---every time you laugh at someone who is different than you, or express your vitriol at someone publicly just so you can feel a bit of emotional release, or you dare to assume that you KNOW what is going on in a persons mind and heart--you are driving that person into the same depths. Be careful of your words. Just be careful of your words. You cannot ever unring a bell.
