I have twice been to The Sudan during this blessed month of Romadan. What a generosity and simplicity of life!? After my visit of 1994 I wrote an article ‘Khartoum: eta genet ab meriet’ (Khartoum: the paradise on Earth) then, I remember, there were a lot of unhappy faces from ‘the people of hell.’ But I was invited for a BIG dinner party by the Sudanese emabassy members in Nyala Hotel. And I built a good friendship with Mohammed A’sqrun – then Sudanese consulate in Eritrea, afterwards moved to New York. September 1, 2010 the day I fled the country of hell for good. At our arrival to the border town Kassalla ‘Ardel Habayb ya remzel maHana’, as one of its singers late Abdel3azim Hareka says it all. We were stopped by a group of people at the entrance of the town. We have no option but to stop and break the fast and share everything they have had. I personally I was not fasting. But it is not about fasting it is about big-heartedness and sharing. One of the Sudanese on this clip mensioned the word ‘mewatn Allah’ (the citizens of God) exactly I am a citizen of God. No more a citizen of hell. Hell should definitely go to hell!! In Khartoum almost everyday I was invited to all the families I know. Lisanedin Alkhetib was my guide. He is a Sudanese. I know him from the country of hell. He was inprisoned for a couple long years for a reason yet he doesn’t even know for sure. Finally he was dismissed for good. It is not easy and natural for the people of hell and heaven to intermingle. Every time we were invited, we had to run as fast as we can on the streets. If people broke the fast while we are on the street they will not let us pass without joining their meal. Or that would be insolent of us. At times they gave as dates, small caned cold water and some buicute if it is time for ‘Azan’ while we are still in the mini-buses. Ya hillel ahli Sodan wo Romadan Kerim!!
