I have visited The Square previously for the Ladies Lunch, this is my first evening visit. We decided to try the early bird, this is something we often do to try a place out, it was £17.95 for three courses which we thought excellent value. The first course was sticky beef with Roquefort and pine nuts, I can honestly say it was one of the best dishes I have tasted and we almost always dine at high quality restaurants. I had never tasted anything like this, it was one of those dishes that propriety prevented you from licking out the dish. It was extremely well thought out in terms of the balance of sweet to sour, the pine nuts added the appropriate crunch to an otherwise meltingly soft meat and the temperature was even well though out, warm enough to bring out the flavour but not too hot to wilt the green leaves. I had the beetroot gnocchi, laden with sweet and juicy cherry tomatoes, which was delicious, my Husband had the duck which he ate with gusto. And so to the desserts, my Husband had the Banoffee, it looked gorgeous and I had to taste what looked like peanut brittle, not sure if it was but it was exquisite. I had the strawberries and the only tiny criticism I can find with the whole meal, was the gel topping to the torte which I found quite tasteless. All of it was beautifully presented, Im so tired of the uptight spots of this and spots of that, this it seemed to circumnavigate and felt generous, it was what you would like to be able to present for a dinner party if you had the talent and expertise of this Chef, you must try this restaurant, in fact I am going to book the Christmas menu today but hopefully before this review appears so that I cant get in! To finish, the interior is intimate, stylish and modern, the staff friendly and just the right side of attentive; If I might give a little suggestion, change the background music, it drove us nuts but nowhere near far enough to spoil a thoroughly delightful experience... Well done staff amazing review
