I have worked hard since I retired to rid the hillside above the barn of the much hated multi-flora rose and autumn or Russian olive bushes. These two plants are highly evasive and will take over an area in a matter a few years. Last Monday I was mowing the barn lot on my trusty John Deere Mower. I started up the hill to mow around a stump, as I have many times before, and the next thing I knew I started to slide off of the mower seat. Well I don’t know about you but if my butt goes in one direction the rest of me is destined to follow. Off the seat I went and I fell right on that stump with my back. I rolled off of the stump and laid there for a few seconds to replace the air which had departed from my lungs. As I rolled over and sat up the mower comes down off of the hill and goes slowly by me, making the turn as if I was still aboard. I managed to get to my feet and walk over to the mower, as it was not moving too fast, and shut it off. Then I sat back down on the ground to collect my thoughts. At this point the boss comes out to the end of the front porch and yells up the hill, “Are you okay?” I replied, “Yes, I think so.” Not really sure if that was true or not at this point. The next thing I know she is standing there looking me over as I am trying to restring my shoelace into my shoe as it had managed to break in the melee. After I tied my shoe, I made it to my feet and walked down to the house. My back was sore and there was a small scrape, but other than that it looked pretty good. No blood, no broken bones. Lucky old man was I. After the boss decided I was okay, it was time to give me down the road for mowing on the hillside. She said she knew something was wrong because she and Abbey heard a strange sound. Judy said Abbey even jumped up to the window still to get a better look. I told her I remembered hollering,” Whoa!”, but that was it. I am pretty sure the sound I made when I hit the stump was not a pleasant sound, so that may have been what she and the dog heard. All is mending now. The only time I hurts now is when I sneeze, cough, or laugh. My son tried to kill me with laughter on Friday night, but that is another story. I thought I would drive down to the paper box and get the Sunday paper. I might mow some today (not on the hillside) or I may just do little or nothing. I do hope you have a wonderful Sunday, today. Give your friends and family a hug today and tell them how blessed you are because they are a part of your life. God sent these good folks to you for a purpose, but he is going to want them back, sometime sooner than we want. Thank you for being a blessing in this crazy my life. All the Best from the Valley.
