I havent been very good about reporting on my recent tournaments. Here is a report of the Japan Cup. I was recently in Japan for the Japan Cup. I did pretty well as I ended up finishing tied for 5th. The top 8 made the TV finals. Unfortunately there are no plans to televise the TV finals here in the US. It will be shown in Japan on December 8th and 9th I believe. I believe that some time after that it should be available on PBAs Xtra Frame. I bowled pretty well, but I could have lost any of the 3 matches leading up to the TV finals. After qualifying 14th on the B squad (the top 32 advanced from each squad) my first match was against Sang Pil Park. I had 2238 for the 10 games with 61% (70/115) strikes, 88% (101/115) pocket shots with 68% (69/101) strikes on pocket shots. I missed 2 4-9s, 3-6, 4-6, 6-7, 4-6-7, 2-4-5-8 and 4-6-10. I mainly used the Mastermind Intellect and the Fortera Exile for a few games. Mr Park bowled very well, but a few crucial mistakes and bad breaks gave me the edge and the win. I beat him with scores of 217-205, 259-249 and 235-207. He had 661 for the 3 games with 64% (21/33) strikes, 94% (31/33) pocket shots and 68% (21/31) strikes on pocket shots. He missed a 10 pin in the 10th frame of game one to give me that game. he also had a rip 7-10 and a light 8-10 for opens. In that match I had 69% (24/35) strikes, 91% (32/35) pocket shots and 72% (23/32) strikes on pocket shots. Fortunately I didnt have any opens. In that match I used the Mastermind Intellect and Brutal Nightmare. My second match was against the 2014 PBA50 Player of the Year, Norm Duke. I was fortunate to win in 3 games with scores of 227-225, 225-200, and 251-247. In the 10th frame Norm had a chance to win the game, but left the 2-4-5 on his first shot. After missing the 10 pin in frame one and the 4-6-7-10 in the 3rd frame Norm rallied for 200 in game 2. In game 3, Norm left a rip 7 pin on his 2nd shot in the 10th to give me the win after I had started with the front 8 only to big four in the 9th and left a ringing 10 on my 2nd shot in the 10th. For the 3 games I had 703 (234.3 ave) with 62% (21/34) strikes, 94% (32/34) pocket shots and 66% (21/32) strikes on pockets shots. I missed a 7 pin (by a lot) in the very first frame and the 4-6-7-10 split in the 9th frame of the 3rd game on the front 8. Norm had 672 (22.4 ave) for the 3 games with 62% (21/34) strikes, 91% (31/34) pocket shots on 68% (21/31) strikes on pocket shots. Again I used the Mastermind Intellect and Brutal Nightmare. My third match was against Michael Fagan. Again I got some breaks to win 3-1. I won 235-217, lost 205-235, won 211-202, and 237-191. I had 888 (222 ave) for the 4 games with 57% (25/44) strikes, 86% (38/44) pocket shots with 66% (25/38) strikes on pocket shots. I had 2 opens, a 4-9 and a 4-6-7 while making the 1-2-4-10 washout. Mike had 845 (211.3 ave) for the 4 games with 50% (22/44) strikes, 84% (37/44) pocket shots with a very low 57% (21/37) strikes on pocket shots. He had 3 opens on splits of 4-9, 4-10 and 4-6-7-10 while picking up the 5-7. Mike looked really lined up in the 2nd game, but couldn’t carry the 3rd game. Then in the 4th game he had a little trouble missing the pocket as I think he was trying to figure out how to carry better. Again I used the Mastermind Intellect and Brutal Nightmare. My round of 8 match was against lefty Korean Park Kyung Shin. The TV match didn’t go very well. I had a pretty good reaction, but was just a bit off of hitting the pocket where I needed to while my opponent pretty much carried everything and almost struck on his shot in the 9th frame when he went very high. I had a 4-6-7-10 split in the 9th frame when I needed to strike out and get some help from him. He beat me 278-214 and went on the win the tournament. I used the Mastermind Intellect. It was nice to have a good tournament against the younger players, but I would rather have a good finish in a total pins type of tournament. Hopefully I will be able to do that in the next year.
