I havent done this in a while but these are my picks for books for the last year. It is by no means an exhaustive list. Some are always on there, like The Road to Serfdom and Liberty and Tyranny. Some I read this year. This might give you some suggestions on what to read during 2015. BOOK LIST FOR 2014 The Road to Serfdom by Frederick von Hayek – One of the best books outside of the Bible. Hayek gives reasons why tyranny is immoral. Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy by Eric Metaxas – I recently re-read this book. Absolutely tremendous. Metaxas makes Bonhoeffer come alive. Don’t let the length put you off – it’s a very easy read. Letters and Papers From Prison – Some of the letters Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote to his family and friends after he was arrested in 1943 and incarcerated in Tegel Prison before he was executed by Hitler in 1945. It will wet your appetite to read more of Bonhoeffer’s writings. Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years by Martin Gilbert – I’m reading this now and learning so much about Churchill and England and Europe in the 1930s. Churchill never stops warning his own government officials, who refuse to listen to him, about Hitler and Germany. Excellent. The Real Thomas Jefferson by NCCS – I learned so much about Thomas Jefferson, and so will you. The Real Benjamin Franklin by NCCS – Same thing – I learned so much about Benjamin Franklin that I never knew and ended up admiring him very much. Liberty and Tyranny by Mark Levin – One of the classics in the conservative world. You will love the chapter on faith. The 5,000 Year Leap by NCCS – Teaches you about the early history of the founding of the United States and the working of our government. If every American would read this book, we would have an informed electorate. 1776 by David McCullough – Gives the triumphs and struggles of George Washington and the patriot army during 1776. This Glorious Struggle by Edward Lengel – Lengel presents some of the letters of George Washington during the years of the War of Independence. You will learn how great a man George Washington really was. George Washington’s Military Genius by David Palmer – Historical revisionists have painted George Washington as a lucky idiot. Palmer, a former superintendent of West Point, proves that Washington was actually a military genius. A book you should not only read but have your children and grandchildren read. In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson – Gives the history of Nazi Germany in the early 1930s through the eyes of an American family. Larson reveals the evil of Hitler and his minions even when he first came to power. Not for the fainthearted. Mao’s Great Famine by Frank Dikotter – Dikotter gives the horrific details of life under Mao in the late 1950s, early 1960s. Great, great book but very hard to read at times. Things to Come by J. Dwight Pentecost – Pentecost’s doctoral thesis from the 1950s on the pre-trib, pre-mil position. Lots of good knowledge. I Want to Live These Days With You by Dietrich Bonhoeffer – A Lutheran group in Germany took some of Bonhoeffer’s writings and turned them into a devotional book. I have to read some of the daily devotions 2-3 times before I understand them. For those looking for something deeper spiritually. 1920: The Year of the Six Presidents by David Pietrusza – Bill Clinton has nothing on these guys. Most of the men running for president and vice-president in 1920 had their own scandals – except for Calvin Coolidge.
