I havent had a good rant in awhile, but when I saw this drivel from our lovely neighbor to the north I just couldnt resist. This article should have been titled, Im Canadian and I have an uninformed opinion I want to share One of the big things that keeps getting glossed over is the civilian labor force participation rate. The unemployment number looks nice because it doesnt count people who have given up on looking for jobs. We are below 63% participation and havent creeped away from that number in a few years now. Basically were barely creating enough jobs to keep up with population growth. If you take the number of people who arent working and combine that with the number of people who are underemployed (working part time because they cant land a full time gig), youre looking at 41.6% of the population. Are we doing better than Europe? Generally yes, but look at the policies that landed them in hot water. Interest rates being low isnt necessarily a good thing either. At least not when its being dictated by the government. Youre artificially changing the market. Youre also killing peoples savings and hurting the bond market. Whats going to happen when interest rates inevitably rise again? The nation is going to be crippled by debt (more so than it currently is), lenders wont be able to lend money, and industry is going to grind to a halt. Oil imports declining and oil production rapidly increasing is occurring despite President Obama (the production is a large part of why imports are declining, too). He has consistently stood in the way of oil. These things are happening privately on lands owned by citizens and despite onerous regulations. The deficit is rapidly declining? If thats true, its not a result of any of the Presidents initiatives. His budgets were so outlandish that not even a single member of his own party voted for them. The CBO estimated that his most recent budget proposal for FY2014 wouldve produced $6.6 trillion in deficits over the next ten years while adding $1.4 trillion in taxes and thats looking at the rosiest of pictures of how PPACA is actually going to play out. Its likely that the healthcare law is going to cost far more than has been estimated. People can blame Bush all they want to, but authorization for spending takes place in Congress. The debt has more than doubled to a grand total of $18 trillion since Democrats took control of Congress in 2007. Obama was part of that spending then and accused Bush of being irresponsible and unpatriotic for amassing such debt. America is respected internationally? Great job with relations in the Russia, Eastern Europe, Mexico, etc. Is there any world leader that actually thinks Obama and his employees are doing a good job? Yes, Obama brought soldiers home from Iraq against recommendations made by people familiar with the situation over there including Leon Panetta. Now that place has returned the cesspool it was years ago. Are congratulations truly in order there? Lets not forget the wreckage of Libya, Egypt, and Syria. The sacking of an American Embassy and ensuing deaths of American citizens by terrorists despite warnings is something of an accomplishment. The last time that happened was...
