I havent posted much of late as not been well but even from my sick bed I have been helping the cause. This is the letter I have sent to my local newspaper today and perhaps it is something we could all consider doing by finding out what your Labour candidate is doing in the community and making sure the constituency knows via the press.. Local newspapers tend to publish local issues but then you can slip in a few national issues too as I do and if you are brave enough, have a go the government at the end... LOL CHALLENGING CIRCUMSTANCES I was delighted to see it reported in the News and Star that Lee Sherriff, the Labour party’s candidate for Carlisle, is supporting the fire service in their battle for their previously agreed pension rights and from other articles I know she actively supported the campaign launched by UNISON to prevent the cuts to the North West Ambulance Service’s night-time emergency vehicles across the region. Thankfully a sterling effort from all concerned resulted in the NWAS NHS Trust suspending their proposals. Given the current appalling situation in emergency medicine both locally and nationally, it is just as well the campaigners acted so promptly on our behalf. Along with Ms Sherriff’s concerns about the alarming growth of Carlisle’s food bank and her involvement in Carlisle Key, a service to help young people who find themselves in very difficult circumstances, it is obvious she has the health and well-being of our local community at heart and is proactive in raising awareness of some of the important social issues that affect our citizens, particularly the most vulnerable. She has the energy, compassion and vision to be an effective voice for the people. Like many people with a social conscience, she appreciates the dedicated work of front-line public service workers, nurses, doctors, fireman, paramedics and carers, who are working in ever increasing challenging circumstances to save lives or help others and she understands that their contribution to society should be highly valued and rewarded. Unfortunately we have a Government who although quite happy to feather their own nest in more ways than one, appear reluctant to show the necessary respect to those in caring professions, refusing also to acknowledge the serious consequences of downgrading essential services, under-resourcing them and demoralising already overworked and stressed staff. This Government should really be ashamed of themselves for the crisis they have created in our publically funded services, particularly our NHS and we can only hope that shame follows them to the ballot box on May 7th 2015.
