I haven’t read everything Jeannine Guttman has written on Facebook, but this comment on criticisms of the outspoken man whose child was among the recent victims of a mass murderer must be among her best: The human species is doomed when people can no longer feel compassion and empathy for the father of a son murdered in cold blood. I have been really shocked at all the vicious vitriol thrown at the father of the young man who was killed. This dad isnt media savvy. He doesnt have handlers. He doesnt have speech writers. No one does his talking points. He probably doesnt even know what talking points are! He was just an ordinary guy caught up in a truly tragic event that will affect him and his family forever. In his own words, this father is broken. Cant we give this gentleman a break. Cant we send him a little love. Is that really too much to ask? I fear that too many media and political figures in America have, at long last, lost all sense of decency. Because of their unspeakable actions and reprehensibe behavior, I dont even recognize this country anymore. Where once we rallied together, we now allow legions of opinion leaders to divide us with hateful, judgmental and heartless rhetoric whose only goal is to inflict pain. They want the public to react with similar diatribes of rudeness, anger, and fury. When did this happen to us? Are people like Joe the Plumber really unable to grasp the devastating grief of a traumatized father? Let this poor family alone. Let them grieve. Let them bury their son. If you cant say anything healing, then please dont say anything at all. Amid all the shouts and screams of recrimination, I dont hear any pundit offering to say a prayer. So I ask, how about offering a prayer? That would be really appropriate gesture. That is something that Americans used to do in the face of tragedy. Now we must endure these so-called spokesmen like Joe the Plumber, these opportunistic haters who turn any personal suffering into a political juggernaut used to score partisan points. I really dont understand what has happened to this nation. It is in danger of losing its humanity -- and its soul.
