I hear all the time that wages have gone flat for Americans. So in trying to understand why I came across William Lazonick from U Mass Lowell who heads the Center for Industrial Competitiveness, who says (paraphrasing): In the 1980s Large American companies dedicated 1/2 of their Earnings to Shareholders and the other half to Equipment and Employees. Heres the kicker: From 2003 thru 2012 91% of Company Earnings have gone to Shareholders in the form of Stock Buybacks and Dividends. You ask why? Because CEO Compensation is now based on Share Price. The quickest way to raise Share Price is Stock Buybacks and Dividend Payments. There you have it. And that is why we MUST get corporate money out of Politics. If we dont our children, no matter how well educated, will not see the same standard of living we took for granted at the end of the last half century.
