I hear *all the time* this idea that anonymity lets someones real self come out, when in fact I think its much more likely that it does exactly the opposite - like most engagement with technology, I would guess that anonymity made possible through computer screens and keyboards is much more likely to short-circuit the primal sense of compassion, reciprocity, and accountability that human beings have developed over hundreds of thousands of years as social animals. The ability to engage in any kind of personal interaction without revealing ones identity is essentially a modern concept for most of the population of the world; instead of thinking that a system in place for *maybe* three decades is capable of showing the real essence of humanity, maybe we should look at how people behave when they engage with it and see *that* behavior as an aberration.
