I heard Her long before I saw Her. I stopped dead in my tracks. I knew the sound, more shrill than the wail of a banshee. I ducked under a bush, as good as invisible. With a shriek, She strode near, hair plastered to Her face, eyes shining unnaturally bright as She scanned the brush. Each step She took had Her titanic body rocking with the effort. Pressing myself low to the ground, I held my breath. If I stayed perfectly still, She wouldn’t come for me. I prayed to the Maiden that my concealment might last. The gods were not so kind. She caught my scent, head snapping toward me. With an ululation, the hunt was on. Her massive feet crashed across the meadow, Her god-sized frame moving unnaturally quickly. Cover. I needed cover. I could hear Her wailing, a strangled sound. I headed toward a tree and threw myself upward with the speed of cornered prey. I hauled myself onto a branch, praying that I might be safe. The gods have forgotten me. I felt a massive paw wrap around my stomach. I scrabbled at the branch to no avail. I was wrenched into Her frame. She gave a victorious scream, deafening me. She began to choke me, Her iron arms crushing my lungs. I prayed for one last miracle before slipping into nothingness. And lo and behold, the Maiden heard me. “Little Emma,” The Maiden called, “put the cat down, I think you’re hurting him.”
