I heard Professor Chubb, Chief Scientist of Australia, talk on Abc - TopicsExpress

I heard Professor Chubb, Chief Scientist of Australia, talk on Abc this morning. He was asked what impact the deregulation of fees and the charging of real interest on student debts would have on the future of Australia. He used Agricultural science as an example. An Agricultural Science degree to the student would go up around 37% if the university offering that degree was simply to keep the same number of dollars in per student. The number of Agricultural Science students has dropped over the last couple of decades to a fairly low level now and its flatlined. At the same time, the Government is running around making trade agreements which require us to increase agricultural exports. Rainfall patterns in the country are changing, according to Bureau of Meteorology charts over 40, 50 years. Will the products we produce today be able to be produced in greater quantities given those variables? Professor Chubb said that we need them, so why would you charge them more to do a degree thats so critically important to our international relations, to our own capacity to produce food for ourselves and to export it as well? He also mentioned that we are one of only three nations in the OECD which lacks a national plan on science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Ian Chubb, is the Chief Scientist in Australia. He had absolutely no involvement with the development of the medical research endowment fund outlined in the new budget. This government is a joke.
