As you read this story, think of how you would respond and what you can do to your home to improve your chances in a similar situation. Im not a big fan of peepholes. They tell the person outside right where your head is, most of the time. I prefer video cameras. Relatively cheap versions can be had at any number of stores. In some situations, a driveway alarm would be another workable option. Think of when you walk into a business and a chime or bell goes off when you trip the sensor at the doorway. These can also be set up on a porch. Ive seen these as cheap as $25 dollars in home improvement stores. What are your communications assets? If you have only a cordless phone, consider getting a corded phone. Not only will the cordless version most likely be useless in a power outage, but if the base unit is in a certain part of the house, it can be unplugged and your communication will be lost. Cellular phones are also subject to network failures and areas where coverage is patchy. Look at your house/apartment. If someone breaks in, where would you be safest? Of course, if escape is your preference, have a plan for that, but what happens if you cant run away? In a lot of situations, this safe room will be a closet of some kind or a bathroom. In either case, consider having a sturdy door with a couple of locks and a telephone outlet installed. The vast majority of doors Ive seen, especially interior doors, are little more than two thin pieces of wood with a cardboard core. Ive even seen some very well made doors that were pieces of plywood with trim pieces installed.
