I heard a new one today. I took our 70 kg (154 lbs.) 86 cm (34 inch) at the shoulder male wolfhound Wallace, and his little sister Stirling to the flea market for our therapy groups monthly flea market walk. Jana was working and could not join me, but it is important that the dogs get the exposure to the strange and sometimes wonderful people who frequent the local flea market, so I braved the walk with both of them, in the hope that someone in the group had a significant other along with them, and that they could take Stirling on the walk. I was in luck, our group leaders husband was in attendance, and Piet very kindly agreed to walk Stirling in the madding crowd, as it were, while I walked Wallace. Everything went swimmingly well, Stirling was happy to have a new walking companion, although she nearly pulled Piet off his feet the first time she lost sight of Wallace and myself. We proceeded walk through the crowds to the usual comments of its not a dog, its a horse, it must eat a lot and the like. Half way through the walk the group stops outside the ablution block to give the dogs and handlers a bit of a rest, and a chance to give everyone a drink, and of course, and chance for the straggles (us) to catch up. Wallace and I were taking advantage of the shade, and talking to Piet about how well Stirling was doing, when a young family came up to us and asked what type of dog Wallace was. I replied that he was an Irish Wolfhound and gave the usual spiel. The woman replied that she had seen this type of dog before at shows and on TV. She then asked me why Wallace was so small! I was at a loss for words.
