I heard about Helen Keller when I was taught school at home in East Africa and read the book about her for English. It made a huge impression on me then and I have never forgotten the feelings I experienced back then as a child, and the realisation of how immensely lucky we are that we can see, speak, laugh and hear others. I was in awe that Annie Sullivan was able to bring the gift of communication, love and understanding to Helen Keller who was so alone in the silent darkness.
