I heard him sing for the first time in 1970. Portions of the terminology in the next sentence may be unfamiliar to some of you. For it was at a Capital Section CA Rally (whats that), held at Central Assembly of God (wheres that), on Summer Street, not far from the Oregon Capital building. And many of us went to the nearby Bobs (whats that) for 19 cent hamburgers after the concert. Denny Davis was the host pastor, and what a bit of courage it must have required, in those days, to invite the Archers to open the evening, followed by Andre Crouch and the Disciples. It was the loudest music I had even been allowed to listen to at that point in time, but it was powerful. In the years that followed I purchased every new album and sang many of his songs in church. Shortly after Susan and I were married we attended an Andre Crouch concert in the Opera House at the Seattle Center. Besides the music I clearly remember how Andre politely and skillfully dealt with a man who felt it was the time and place for a message in tongues to come forth (it wasnt). I still have his vinyl albums. His music touched my heart and caused me to want to sing along. Take Me Back caused me to reflect on my own salvation. Tell Them stirred a passion for the lost in my heart. Ive Got Confidence inspired me through my Bible College years at NW College. Was anybody else blessed by the music of Andrea Crouch. Maybe in his honor you could mention a song that was especially powerful for you. He passed away today, January 5, 2015, at the age of 72.
