I heard on the news yesterday that in Edmonton there was about one hundred car accidents. And now a rant! If we think this is acceptable it will never get better. Why should it? Because Albertans are per capita the worst drivers in Canada. (Nothing to be proud of) how do we change it? We need to stop calling them accidents. Nothing happens 100 times accidentally. Also they are not accidents because out of a million people only 100 where unlucky? Its not the weathers fault. Its not the fault of the car. Its the driver. In each CRASH one or more humans failed to navigate their vehicle appropriately through the snow covered roads. However instead of getting the proper training to drive better they defend their driving deficiencies by blaming the weather. Because the weather operates your gas pedal, or the road being icy. (But not for the almost one million other drivers, just you) called it what it is, a crash. Accept responsibility for you inability to drive at a safe speed for the conditions, and then get the training to become a better driver. I get no ones perfect but we cant accept accidents happen as an excuse for inattention and inexperience. If we accept responsibility for our driving we will do better at it. Crash are bad and calling them accidents, well sugar coats them to be no big deal. But they are a big deal, on health care, insurance rates and lives. If you dont know if you could drive safer ask a pro. I wrote this because every winter Im force to avoid people sliding through the interactions Im in or stuck in traffic while a tow truck pulls someone of the median. We have what it takes to be better drivers then the rest of Canada, we just choose not to.
