I heard something very disturbing at a medical conference today. One of the doctors on the panel made a statement that stunned me. He said that people who have addictions are incapable of loving anyone but themselves. Addicts do not have the ability to truly love because they are too busy either involved in their addiction or hiding it. Its more complicated and involved than what I am writing here, obviously. I have never heard of this in all my time in medicine, but apparently this well documented in the psychiatric literature An addiction can mean anything: gambling, or drinking. I still cant swallow this, as my father was a gambler. Does anyone have personal experience with this topic - whether you are an MD or not?
