I helped a deer family today. I had started the day driving seeing - TopicsExpress

I helped a deer family today. I had started the day driving seeing a fawn on the side of the road who had been hit by a car. It was actually lying on the sidewalk and it was so sad to see it there with its white spots on its side. So young. I had made a few phone calls, including to the department of transportation but since it was on a county road, they said they couldn’t do anything about it. I tried but still felt defeated in my attempts to have it probably taken care of. So when I drove the same stretch of road in the afternoon, I kept looking for it to see if had been taken care of yet (which it had been) and that’s when I saw the mother and her two fawns. They were climbing the hill towards a partially fenced in playground in a new development and I could see one of her fawns pacing INSIDE the fenced in playground. From the outside, I could see an easy solution to this problem, just like with the viral video of the fawn stuck in the fence, but to them, it is scary and can be life threatening! I may not have been able to help the one I saw earlier, but knew I could help THIS one. I immediately pulled into the development and parked my car right near the playground (who puts a playground near a busy road anyway?) I slowly walked towards the fawn, using my cat voice to talk to her to calm her down to get her to go towards the edge of the fencing away from the road. She paced back and forth a little and once, even came towards me a bit. She was still frightened and unsure where to go. I tried to walk closer and encourage her to move in the direction towards the opening. By this time, the mother deer came around the fence – on the road side of course – with her second fawn following in step. The first fawn was still a little unsure of where to go so I moved closer into the playground and she was able to reunite with her mother, where she immediately tried to nurse. Once I saw they were on the hill, I started taking video to capture the moment as I stayed in the playground to make sure they wouldn’t come back in or go towards the road. Here’s the video of them being reunited. Just a little extra compassion to animals today.
