I highly recommend spending a morning (or afternoon) visiting the Kek Lok Si Temple. It is reputed to be the largest Buddhist Temple in SE Asia and has ginormous statue of Goddess of Mercy. There are a series of temples, Pagodas and gardens - including a turtle liberation pond. I cant even describe how gorgeous this place is, though the entrance is a bit confusing as you have to wind your way through a narrow aisle lined with shops as you climb the hillside. It feels like you are walking in a covered market, going the wrong way, and then suddenly the Temple appears! To get the best use out of your time, the Kek Lok Si Temple is next to Penang Hill (Bukit Bendera). You can take a cable car to the top for spectacular views of the island. There is a mosque and hindu on top of the summit, as well as an old hotel. You can walk through the rain forest at the top, along summit road, or take a golf cart. But honestly there isnt much to do on the top of the hill. A few of the options are a bit overpriced for what you get. Still, the views are nice and the cable car is a fun ride.
