I hope Imran has consulted all his advisers (some of whom are countrys top financial experts and I have known them longer than he has) before issuing his Civil Disobedience call. Within hours of his statement, the countrys debt servicing rates have started inching up and the countrys credit worthiness will be seriously impaired within days. The problem with the countrys present government has been that its incompetence knows no bounds. It came into power through backroom deals based on Musharrafs NRO and Benazirs desire to return to power. Sharif brothers and their relatives have no experience in mass movements. Their path to power has always been paved by the countrys intelligence and military agencies who have been concerned more about Peoples Party than anything else. They have seriously misjudged the mood on the street. They have been publicly ridiculing the small size of Imran and Qadris protest without realizing that they themselves cannot attract a small fraction of the support that their adversaries command. Yes, it is true that Imran could not and did not buy Assembly and Senate votes as Sharifs did last year but the situation is different today. He would sweep the elections today if a fair and independent General Election was held right now. I have been demanding local government elections for more than two years on this page ever since the Supreme Court got involved but both Zardari and Sharifs have been afraid that they would lose those elections. Real democracy begins at local level. There will be no peace in Pakistan until and unless local elections are held and real democratic leadership emerges in the country. Those in public sphere who still have some sanity and honesty left should sit down with the protesters and adopt a reform strategy that would be credible in the eyes of the international community. Otherwise, all the Saudi backing the Sharifs enjoy would not buy them a cup of coffee anywhere in the world. DrMuhammad M Awan 8/18/14
