I hope these cold mornings haven’t frozen your enthusiasm to get out on the water and wet a line, because as the water temperature drops, the fishing heats up. Let’s take a look at the report. Inskip Point has been one of the hot spots this week with quality Tailor and Large Summer whiting landed from the beach, and Blue Fin Tuna are taking medium to shallow diving lures in the channel between the Inskip Point and Fraser Island. The Sandy Straits are fishing very well with large winter whiting up to 28 cm in numbers, being landed in the deeper water from Tininbar to the reef Islands. Monster Flathead and large summer whiting are also on the bite up on the sand flats, with the best catches reported from the last hour of the dropping tide and the first of the making tide. Tailor have been landed off the beach at Poona and the sputnik at Boonoroo using floating pillies, and trolling medium diving lures in the channel from the Moon Boom Islands down to Fig Tree, has been producing some quality fish up to 40 cm. Sand crabs are also running well and there are still a few muddies showing up in the pots, but keep your pots set in the deeper water of the channels to increase your chances of a good feed. The Mary River is on fire at the moment with reports of quality prawns around Beaver Rock, Turkey creek and the Crab Islands and Threadfin Salmon, Grunter, Black and Silver Bream all being caught between Beaver Rock and River Heads. Schoolie Mackerel and Golden trevally have been landed off the Pier at Urangan, and quality winter whiting reported from Torquay to Gatakers Bay. Quality Snapper up to 6 kilos have been reported at the Burrum 8 mile, Wathumba, Rooney’s and the Gutters but only squire showing up at the Artificial Reef and Moon Ledge at this stage. And plenty of pelagic action is happening in Platypus bay with blue and yellow fin Tuna, Spanish mackerel and Giant Trevally taking a range of lures from deep divers to large surface poppers.
