Philosophy Being a councilmember is about more that attending meetings. It’s about being involved, supporting your community and looking for ways to improve the quality of life for everyone. Holding this office should not be a popularity contest. I am not always going to make everyone happy, but as long as I keep the best interests of the residents of Dayton at heart and trying to do the right thing I am fulfilling my promise. I serve on council because I want to see the quality of life in Dayton improve with each passing year. Much of the work I do is in the background. I attend training seminars in order to find out what is going on around the State and how Dayton can leverage other’s ideas to our benefit. I provide ideas to others that they can use in their Departments or committees. I believe in researching and having the facts before I walk into a meeting. If I have a valid question, I ask it. Everyone’s time is important and should not be wasted. Accomplishments Most results of council are a collaborative effort, so I don’t feel I should personally take credit for advances made in the Police Department, the Main Street Program, purchasing a new life squad or ongoing developments around the City. There are particular projects that I have headed up in the past two years that I feel have contributed to making Dayton a better place to live. I’ve done much more in the years that I’ve served, but these are the most recent significant items. Nuisance Ordinance I was the driving force behind enacting a nuisance ordinance in 2013. It took several years of effort to arrive at an ordinance that was strong enough to have an effect. This ordinance was designed to ultimately improve the quality of life for residents and hold the owner of the property accountable for the actions of the residents. Homeownership program I have been a part of the Northern KY Homes Consortium since its inception. Through this program we have enabled over 20 persons to purchase homes in Dayton. I have encouraged HONK, a non-profit organization, to rehabilitate homes in Dayton. HONK ‘s mission is to guide low to moderate income persons into home ownership. In the Spring of 2014 HONK will start its first rehab project in Dayton. They have also purchased empty lots with the intention of building two new homes. I hope that this is just the start of a long relationship with an organization that will serve a sometimes overlooked sector of our residents. Comprehensive Plan I initiated the effort to rewrite our 5 year Comprehensive Plan. This document is critical to future development in Dayton as it outlines the broad vision for the future and paves the way for future development. I was part of all phases, added input and worked with the Planning & Zoning Board. By initiating this effort and doing the work ‘in-house’, the City saved over $20,000 that would have normally been paid to an outside entity to complete the work. Vision The coming years should bring good fortune to Dayton. Grant Park and Riverpointe Condominiums are nearing completion. Manhattan Harbor is well on its way. Our City is cleaner that it has been in years, our blight inspector is relentless and our Public Services (Police, Fire and Public Works) are becoming better every day. We need to concentrate on what we can do for those residents who have ‘toughed it out’ during the lean years. If elected, I have several projects I have been working on that I would like to continue to pursue. Explore Federal Grants, revolving loan funds and other assistance programs that will allow homeowners to upgrade their properties. Work with mortgage companies to obtain foreclosed properties and then get them in the hands of homeowners. We had one successful project and it should serve as a framework for more. Promote the YMCA. We have a wonderful facility that provides services for our youth. We need to find ways to get more children interested and involved. My sincere hope is that my body of work for the City speaks for itself and that the residents want me to continue to work for them and see fit to allow me to remain in office and represent them.
