I hope those of you who were looking forward to this debate found it entertaining, at least. As an ordained Protestant pastor with a Masters Degree in theology from the Chicago Theological Seminary at the University of Chicago I can tell you without fear of impeachment that this whole discussion totally misses the point. The point of the Genesis account, to begin with, was not to explain creation, but rather to display in beautiful mytho-poetic language the relationship between humanity, the planet (or the creation) and the Divine, or God. And that relationship is one of mutual and unqualified love - Gods love of his/her creation, including but not limited to human beings, and the call to each of us to show our love of God by loving and caring for one another and all of creation in return. Simple. Explaining the physics and chemistry and biology of creation is the purview of the sciences, and their explanation and questioning is not at all in conflict with the awe-inspiring mytho-poetic theological image shared by the author of the book of Genesis. The sciences should be taught in school; the Genesis theology should be shared in churches and synagogues.
