I introduce you to Mary Henson. Chances are youve seen her walking the roads around Hillsboro, Festus and De Soto with her stash of plastic bags. She calls her trips around the area working as she collects food for the De Soto food pantry. She turned 76 last week. She and her husband moved here from California years ago and bought a home and acreage in rural De Soto. She has no children and no family in the area. She lives alone with her dogs since her husband went into a nursing home due to health problems including diabetes and prostate cancer. Her neighbors on Russell Road arent too crazy about her because of her color. As a result her property is fenced with the gate locked at all times. Considering all shes been through in her 76 years, she maintains a positive, upbeat attitude....not a shred of self pity. Every time I talk with her, which once or twice a week, I am reminded how blessed I am. Sweetest little woman youll ever meet. If you see her walking, especially in this hot weather, stop for a second, give her a cold bottle of water, or her favorite, Coke (the real deal - not diet), introduce yourself to her and prepare to be blessed.
