I join millions of truth seekers and advocte of peace in Nigerian and all part of the globe to celebrate an icon of hope, a statesman and a man who gives true meaning to the phrase “Man of God“. I salute the saggacious and couragious Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah for attaining the glorious age of 61. If all religious leaders are of the ilk of Bishop Kukah,i am sure religion will be understood within its context in Nigeria and the world over. My Friend Samaila Aruwan had done a wonderful piece on him in which i was tagged today. I cannot do more justice. I wish however,to relay my little encounter with him about 3 years ago. I was informed by the officiating priest of the Queen of Apostles Catholic church in the evening of 7th May 2010 that he will not officiate my wedding the following day for a minor mistake that was no fault of mine(church politics). This was when we went to the church for the final rehearsal in the evening. The priest refused our entrities,explanations and put off his phone. At this time, many of my friends that came from other parts of the country were coming in. I was in a fix and my wife- to- be was crying. I was desperate. I remembered a very senior colleague and called him to tell him my situation. He called me back and said i should go and meet the Bishop in the vicarage at Kakuri Kaduna. I was fortunate to meet the man i had read so much about and seen on TV on several occasions. He was just arriving from Calabar when we met him but immediately we told him our plight he did not hesitate. He went (in person) with us back to the priest to iron out our issues. Within ten minutes of our going back we got his assurances to come back for our wedding the following day. I was overawed by his humility,sense of justice and fairness and non bias. I am sure he may not remember me or what he did for me that night because he did it out of genuine convinction. He had also helped thousands under similar or worse circumstances. I forever remain grateful for his kind gesture. Happy birthday sir.
