I joined the local Alzheimers Dementia Support service today in Boyne Grove, for the Sing for Pleasure session. Pro jazz singer Julia George led the session, which brought together those living with dementia or Alzheimers, their families, and volunteers, covering real classic songs including Its a Long Way to Tipperary and Im forever blowing bubbles - ones that resonate and bring back memories of peoples youth/past. It was incredible to see how much everyone enjoyed it - initially quite shy about the whole prospect of singing (Im awful - Marc can testify to that) - I completely got stuck in, as it was less about performing, and all about participating and sharing the moment together. Not only does the session provide a social setting, it also creates a really stimulating environment - and some research indicates that even when many memories are hard to retrieve, music is especially easy to recall. It also helps with allowing people to express themselves freely, and to relate to others in the group. Everyone loved it. Im definitely going back. Thanks to David for hosting me.
