I just answered one of the oddest questions ever posed to me on FB. You can check out the original post for the context. But I thought I might post my answer as a stand-alone thought. (For the perennially cranky: one man’s opinion, take or leave all or part of it, no need to set me straight as it probably won’t help, etc.) —— Im hopeful that my songs will provide a small measure of Grace and Good News to whoever may hear them. No matter what their statement of faith or any other identifying factors. I simply try to be sensitive about what I might sing in a Church Service versus, lets say, a club like Davids [Wilcox] going to be at tonight. Ive said for years, though, that my opinion is that its not so much the job of a Christian to not be offensive, but that we take great care that if people are likely to be offended, theyre offended at the right stuff. Jesus stated, in summary, that He would be despised and that, by extension, His Message would often be despised. What we Church folks accomplish way too often is to play a large part in unnecessary or irrelevant offenses. Offenses that obscure and diminish the Gospel. If someones offended by the Cross, the notion of sin, the blood aspect of the deal, theres little I can do to assuage them. Thats the deal. But my heart breaks for people who have been unnecessarily and, in some cases, quite sinfully hurt in Jesus name. If you carve John 3:16 onto a baseball bat and start swinging, you cant blame folks for only remembering the bat. A family law attorney once told me something that has been one of my personal rules of the road for over twenty years: Sometimes you can be so right, youre wrong.
