I just bought this book for the 3rd time, reading it for a 5th time (because its so far ahead of its time) and after a great introduction by his grandson, this is the first paragraph: I am enthusiastic over humanitys extraordinary and sometimes very timely ingenuities. If you are in a shipwreck and all the boats are gone, a piano top buoyant enough to keep you afloat that comes along makes a fortuitous life preserver. But this is not to say that the best way to design a life preserver is in the form of a piano top. I think we are clinging to a great many piano tops in accepting yesterdays fortuitous contrivings (i.e. fossil fuels...my insert here) as constituting the only means for solving a given problem. Our brains deal exclusively with special-case experiences. Only our minds are able to discover the generalized principles operating without exception in each and every special-experience case which if detected and mastered will give knowledgeable advantages in all instances. Bucky always thought in whole systems both contextually and in practical application, with everything being connected somehow. We are seeing that in advanced quantum physics and the whole earth as living organism, Gaian mindset. My point is, its beyond a shadow of doubt that we are all in this together and the sooner we realize it, the more we become part of the solution and not the problem. I also loved how he discerned the difference the Brain as separate from the Mind. Worth another read?
