I just came across a review of one of my books that said, Its a shame the author is so disdainful of overweight women. There are a lot of us in the world. Yeah, the author is an overweight woman, too. And she feels no disdain whatsoever. Not for overweight women, not for gay guys, not for black people, or white people, or yellow people, or purple people. Im not the characters I write about. Just because Savannahs a neurotic Southern Belle with a weight-complex and an overblown sense of us and them, doesnt mean I am. Its her story, not mine. Shes telling it. Im just writing it down. My books are not a vehicle for my own secret racist or homophobic or weight-prejudiced agenda. As it happens, Im neither racist nor homophobic nor thin. I guess maybe I need to put one of those disclaimers on my books: The opinions herein are solely those of the characters, and the author takes no responsibility whatsoever for anything they may say or do.
