I just clicked onto Fairfields Art centre site so that I could organize a weekly group of development and Evolution and was greeted by this message that has saddened me so much, the Art centre was such an inspirational place to grow Creatively and funding had been cut by the government, god forbid we should find the power of creative development, I feel so sad by this : We are sorry to say that Fairfields Arts Centre is no more. For over 20 years, Fairfields Arts Centre ran a busy programme of some 35 different arts activtities a week, classes, workshops, exhibitions and events, across a range of art forms, but with particular emphasis on dance, visual arts and digital media. We brought work by many international artists to Basingstoke. And we also worked hard to support many young artists and performers when they were unknown at the start of their careers. We are very pleased that many of them have gone on to tour and exhibit nationally and internationally, and to win national and international awards. Fairfields delivered such as busy programme, while receiving the least amount of funding subsidy per head from Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council of any funded arts organisation in Basingstoke. (According to B&DBCs own published figures). However, despite offering so much for so little, the subsequent further grant cuts meant that Fairfields could not survive. We have an archive of online galleries of many of our Art Gallery exhibitions from 2005 onwards and are looking at keeping these somewhere else in future.
