I just decided to take back my voice... you do BS and someone ask me about it Ill be honest. the only way to stop abuse of any kind is to speak up... In 2007 I was the fashion editor of a local Brooklyn magazine. I was doing an article on African design In Brooklyn. Got of the B45 at Atlantic & Washington and walked into a local artisans boutique to cover the line for the article... when he realized it was a Black owned Publication. He immediately became vile. Made it clear that he did not like the fact that this businness would think they could do what the NYtimes did (they did not) . that he wanted to be covered by teh times and not this.. and then treatened to sue if they mentioned him. He was extremely vile and nasty. So much so I still get upset when I think about it. The article was published without mentioning this line... and in the comments was a direct mention and a critique on our oversight. I would have corrected this but for the editor the very person he was nasty about., A couple months later their was a drive to save this business. I said nothing, the editor stepped up to help. In the last few weeks I have been thinking of this and other similar incidents. A huge part of why the sector is in its current state. there will be no change till these sores are addressed. There is no forum to address these Culturally we sweep these ills under the carpet and blame... the Man Then tonight someone asked me to help someone else... Placing artist at this very space. I could not. I am very protective of the artist I work with and in Business in Creativity energy matters. I mulled over it for hours then decided. I would not Bite my tongue to accomodate the vile. If as a culture we stood up for Right , less of this negative behavior would be expressed or executed If asked honesty is my policy...
