I just finished an oral history of MTV and one of the elements of MTV in its early days was its REFUSAL to play black artists. Suits were so resistant that CBS Records had to threaten to pull all their other artists to get Michael Jackson played on MTV. You know the rest of the story: MTV then proceeded to make a fortune from Jackos presence. The same is true of rap music. MTV fought it and fought until they finally relented. Then they proceeded to make a shit ton of cash on hip hop So, remember this as you hear the suits praise Stu. There was great criticism of his style and even a THREAT to pull him from SportsCenter for being too black. And this wasnt in the 60s or 70s or 80s. This was in the LATE 90s Theyll always criticize you until you succeed. Then theyll take credit for your success--bw
