I just finished reading 52 HEARTLIFTERS FOR DIFFICULT TIMES by Diana Savage. With gentle humor, she counsels those who are hurting. Her chapter called Singin the Blues and Other Forbidden Melodies reminded me on one of my own humiliating experiences: I was 16 and just returning from the heart of Africa -- not the most auspicious year of life to make quantum cultural leaps. Mama and I had bought and/or borrowed coats and hats (hats were a must back then!) from other missionaries to face the change from the tropics to a Missouri winter. We thought we looked pretty spiffy. As we deplaned, my brother, who had been home for a year, leaned against the terminal building and laughed. Obviously, a trip to a beauty salon was in order -- a lifetime first for me. I nervously took the chair at the beauty parlor. When asked what style I wanted, I shrugged my shoulders. To make conversation, the beautician asked me if I liked Presley. (This was at the height of his fame.) Again, I shrugged and turned red. Later, in our hotel room, regaling the family with my misery, I asked my brother who was propped against the foot of the bed, Whos Parsley? Jim fell back onto the mattress, rolled about, and held his sides with laughter. Me? I wanted to hit him but just shrugged and turned red. 52 HEARTLIFTERS will brighten your day whether youre 16 or 74.
