I just finished reading a book about the pitfalls and successes of being an indie author. The lady who wrote it has released 30 books in 2 years, all of which hit the bestseller lists - and not just in their genre. So I think its pretty safe to assume this lady really knows what shes talking about. She had a lot of advice to share, and particularly since a great deal of that advice echoes what other successful authors say, I trust it. Theres also a good dose of common sense involved with it. A LOT of that advice applies to nearly anything in life, not just writing and publishing. Im summarizing a couple of her suggestions because theyre good advice for life in general, even if they do apply in specific ways to being an author. Answer your messages, or, in other words, dont think youre too good to appreciate people. No matter how big you think you are, theres always someone bigger. Bad mouthing people and making enemies is a fast track to failure. When you speak on social media, make sure it wont reflect poorly on you tomorrow, even if taken out of context. Theres a TON more I *could* share from the book, but I figure the people who need to hear it the worst are probably wouldnt think it applies to them. I have better things to do.
