I just finished the latest in my ongoing Charles Dickens project, Great Expectations. You know, Id never read this one, nor had I ever watched more than a small amount of movie or TV adaptations. Those had prepared me for the convict Pip meets at the beginning, and Miss Havisham (though I read the whole novel with Gillian Andersons voice in my head for that character), and Estella. They hadnt prepared me for the insight into Pips personality, the ways in which he misapprehended virtually everything at all times, and yet came off sympathetically all along. As always with Dickens, its the language, and the asides, and the characters, and the details, and the images, and the comedy, and the heart-racing drama, and the immersion into the world he portrays. It just seemed to go very fast, this one.
