I just finished watching the Presidents speech on immigration. - TopicsExpress

I just finished watching the Presidents speech on immigration. Pass a bill, Congress. Indeed. I fully support his actions (its been a long time since Ive been able to say that unequivocally). I know, literally, hundreds of people whose lives will be made better by this process. He has acted where no one has since Ronald Reagan almost 30 years ago. Deporting 5 million people would have disastrous consequences for our economy, for our reputation in the world (I think it would be a humanitarian disaster), and its patently unrealistic logistically. It also would smack of fascism (consider the images of the police, lawfully, removing Elián González from his mothers familys home) to have the authorities rounding up people, hunting them down. Anyone who advocates deporting law-abiding people whove been here for decades is in the gall of bitterness. Felons can go to hell, but the hard-working clean-living productive members of our society are here to stay and now they can do it legally. The President has finally acted; why he didnt do this before the election is a mystery to me. I hope my friends who qualify for this system will take advantage of it and will come out from the crepuscular places they lurk in, able to participate almost fully in the only home that many of them have ever known or remember. That constant anxiety every time they go somewhere of worrying about getting caught will fade away. I am so happy for them. I wont name any of them here so as not to cause them any undue consternation, but just know that I am thrilled for you y ya es hora de liberarse de la ansiedad y las dudas crónicas que les han sido presentes todos los días de sus vidas desde que cruzaron la frontera.
