I just found out about how on Dec 8th the NYC city council said I cant breathe 11 times in a symbolic action. I feel like its a theft of the voice of the people. Symbolic actions belong to those without the power to change policy. Symbolic actions are performed by the public BECAUSE we do not have the power to change policy. If anybody has the power to change the behavior of the NYPD, its the body that governs them. The City Council should not chant. The City Council should not die-in, or put their hands up and say, hands up dont shoot. The City Council should change the law. The City Council should enact policies to stop these tragedies from happening. The City Council should bring accountability to the Police. The City Council should do their job in overseeing the Police Department. To participate in a symbolic action when you have the power to change policy, is like throwing your hands up and shrugging.
