I just found out the sad news that one of my favorite teachers from high school, Hale Sturges, died this month. I took French from him for two years. Not my best subject, and the second year our class took place early in the morning, in the depths of a New England winter. And yet I always looked forward to it. He was warm, funny, and gently demanding, and hed thought deeply about how to make reading old French plays and novels seem important to a bunch of teenagers. When our energy was low, his was high. When ours was high, he was happy. He never phoned in a class. Its easy to keep the moral and human lessons of an education while losing track of their origin. But I know many of you are teachers - many of you have children - and all of you were taught, I hope, by at least one special person, like Mr. Sturges.
