I just found this and thought it would be a useful reminder :) The 6 baking ingredients you should ALWAYS have in your pantry We’ve all been there – you’re ready to do some baking, you’ve chosen a recipe, your mouth is watering already, and you’ve got your baking pans out. But then…. you head to the pantry and to your dismay, you’re out of eggs, or flour, or sugar, or all three! Avoid those frustrating last-minute trips to the supermarket by always having these essential baking ingredients on hand: Sugar – The sweetness in our sweet treats, it almost goes without saying that sugar’s an absolute essential in the kitchen. We suggest keeping both regular white granulated sugar, because it can also be ground up to make icing sugar, and brown sugar for that rich, caramel flavour that recipes sometimes call for. Flour – Plain, self raising, wholemeal, gluten free – we suggest having a bit of a variety on hand. While flour doesn’t actually keep for that long once the packaging’s been opened (around 6 months) there are a few things you can do to help it keep fresh for longer. Once opened, flour should be removed from its paper bag, and placed in an airtight, plastic container with a good seal. You should also avoid heat and moisture (the refrigerator or freezer is a good idea if you live in a particularly hot climate). Butter – Butter is an extremely versatile baking ingredient. It’s great for melting with sugar to make warm caramel sauces, greasing pots and pans, mixing with biscuit crumbs to make easy pie crusts, and of course used in your favourite cake, muffin and cookie recipes. Chocolate – It’s generally safe to assume that almost everyone loves chocolate, so keep some cooking chocolate such as Award Winning PLAISTOWE in your pantry. Chocolate is a versatile and yummy addition to lots of baking recipes. Eggs – As well as being great for a quick omelette or two for breakfast, eggs are a key ingredient used to bind your baking ingredients. They’re also great for brushing on top of scones as a glaze before baking to give that delicious, golden colour on top. Baking powder – A must if you want those cakes, muffins, cupcakes and bread recipes to rise! Baking powder works when it comes into contact with liquid, forming lots of tiny bubbles of carbon dioxide gas, which is what makes things rise and gives them a fluffy texture.
