I just found this article, also published today, that relates to what I said in my Happy New Year post!!! Like us, Sultan Ahmed III of the Ottoman Empire was very interested in entertainment. As it says in the article, scholars who once criticized him for frivolity are beginning to realize he and his advisers did a great service to his empire by starting its first printing press. Like us, they faced opposition in their quest to share information with the world. In their day the opposition came from professional calligraphers, who were much like media distribution companies of today who want to control what information we share with each other, out of their fear of being put out of a job. The Ottoman printing press project was limited by the ability to obtain paper, much as we are limited by our ability to find volunteer translators, who can contribute more to the page than the admin of this page can do just working by herself. :D Check out the full article The Ottoman five who brought the empire books by Niki Gamm, one of my favorite contributors to Hurriyet Daily News.
