I just got a flurry of angry texts from Aurora, at school. She knows they will take her phone away if she is spotted using it, but when the kid is unhappy about something, shes generally unhappy enough to sacrifice something else: Im so grumpy. Were doing Civil Rights in history class and we listened to the I have a dream speech. Its really annoyed me though because they fought so hard and barely gained any rights, yet the US still claims that black and white people are equal. Theyre not really though. Black people are still getting shot every day, unable to get jobs and living in ghettos. It is basically exactly as it was in the 1960s except now it is masked to make it look like it is not there. We should write to Obama and do a wordier, nice re-enactment of that one scene in Boyz in the Hood where Furious is all Brutha to the racist cop. I feel like we should be doing more to change it. Like, protest against the shootings are something. Its sick and twisted that people just watch this stuff and let it go. ------------------------------------------- This is a little girl, still in school, who even now knows wrong from right. She has lived in the ghetto, she has been bussed and bullied in all black schools as one of the very few little white girls in the population. In school on the north side of Kalamazoo a little boy told her he was going to get his daddies gun and shoot her in the face. She remembers that; we talk about it sometimes. And still she is able to put her brain into gear and see the big picture. I am proud of her ever single day; but some days I am so proud I could shout.
