I just got a more thorough understanding of the evidence of Arab colonization in my last name from a family friend. Original Amazigh name: ⴰⵉⵜ ⴰⵃⵎⵓⵛ, Ait Ahmush (ⴰⵉⵜ, Ait = People of; ⴰⵃⵎⵓⵛ, Ahmush = the close one or the friendly one) Post-colonial arabized name adds Abu (Father of, but is said as Bu in Moroccan darija Arabic) and drops the a from ahmush. Mix in French colonization, and the Bu is written Bou and hmush is written hmouch... final result: Bouhmouch. Many Moroccan towns, Moroccan last names and the names of famous Amazigh historical figures have all undergone a similar process of Arabization.
