I just got around to watching the The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug on Blu-ray. I havent made this pronouncement lightly: but it is my personal favorite out of all of Peter Jacksons depictions of The Lord of the Rings. And, for once, it didnt feel like a 2 and a half hour long movie. The acting was fantastic as well. Stephen Fry and Benedict Cumberbatch really shined. The animation on the dragon was the best Ive ever seen in a 3D film (possibly ever), and it wasnt cheaply shoehorned in there. I felt like we got close to half an hour of perfectly polished animation, rendering, compositing and meticulously perfected visual finesse in all department heads on all scenes involving the dragon. In fact its so damn good that I want to watch it again already (I havent done that in a long time with a movie). The human city where Stephen Fry makes an appearance as their king was possibly my favorite section (along with the dragons lair). /End unbiased review
