I just got back from covering the big Eric Garner/Mike Brown march in downtown DC. It was huge and the people were very angry. But its pretty clear that every single one of those protesters believed that personal or systemic racism was responsible for both deaths. Unfortunately Ive concluded that this will always be the narrative whether race is a factor or not in future situations such as these. The only solution I can think of is only allowing black cops to patrol black neighborhoods and Im pretty sure that would be highly unconstitutional. But racially motivated or not, these protesters minds are made up. Nothing will change their view. Todays protest does not represent a call for change. It represents an impasse that has no solution.
