I just got back from giving a workshop on how to do kintsugi. The workshop was held 8 stations from Arita in Kyushu so I went down and visited the Kyushu Ceramic(s) Musuem. They have 2 books that I think are absolutely a must. The first one is a single volume with the complete Shibata collection in it 4,000 yen excluding shipping. The Shibata collection forms the backbone of that museum, it is over 10,000 pieces if I am not mistaken. The time range of the pieces is Edo, from the beginning to the end, no Meiji or very little I think. Having the complete collection in one volume is very nice. The other book is called Modern and Contemporary Marks of Hizen Ceramics, 2,000 yen excluding shipping, and it has hundreds of marks and histories of Arita work. The back includes a listing of the current Saga Prefecture porcelain cooperative group signatures, that is, the current makers of porcelain in the Saga prefecture which includes Arita.
